Make Interesting Radish Recipes Easily
Fall is a great time to plant, eat, and make recipes with radishes because they are quick-growing vegetables for your garden. Radishes were once only used around my house to make radish roses or add to salads. I did not love them but felt obligated to eat them since someone I loved grew them. I now realize it was not the radishes but how I prepared them that made them boring and a chore to eat.
Radishes are low in calories and high in fiber, so they are a healthy way to lose weight. They are also in the cruciferous family, so they have anti-cancer properties! Radishes take only three weeks from garden to table so that you can have several crops each year, and they are local produce available throughout the year.
Several varieties of radishes exist, including different colors, shapes, and sizes. Some of the more memorable varieties include black Spanish, daikon, watermelon, horseradish, and the familiar bright pink ones in many different varieties.
Here are a few varieties of radishes from Sow True Seeds. This company specializes in heirloom varieties and grows its seeds organically. If you don’t grow them, look for them at a local farmers’ market or farm. Some of my favorites include daikon, watermelon, and classic red ones.
Almost any time of the year can be an excellent radish-growing season except winter and the heat of summer.
Ways to Prepare Recipes with Radishes
As a kid, I always had radishes in my dad’s garden. For the next few decades, the only way I had them was whole or halved with their ends trimmed. When I learned that other things could be done besides whole and raw radishes, I thought, “What can I do with radishes?”
Are you looking for some new ways to prepare radishes? Try these ideas:
- Try roasting or grilling them. Their flavor mellows sweetly for those who think they have a hot flavor.
- Use them raw as a condiment for soups, stews, chilis, enchiladas, or even pasta.
- Add to salads or fillings for sandwiches.
- Try eating radish sprouts. You can make them yourself or find them at the grocery store.
- Make them into a fresh salsa. (see my recipe below)
- Make radish pickles with onions and carrots to serve as a topping. One of our favorite Vietnamese sandwiches has them included with fresh cilantro.
- Last but not least, use the radish greens by sauteeing them or even making a pesto (see recipes below)

Another way to prepare radishes is to saute radish bulbs and radish greens! Did you know that you could sauté radish greens and bulbs? The bulbs’ hot, spicy radish flavor, which I do not always love, turns sweet when they are sauteed. They also have a wonderful texture. I never realized before that I could be eating radish greens.
To saute them, heat some 1/2 tablespoon olive oil in a skillet. Saute the greens first season with some salt and pepper. You can even experiment with other seasonings that you enjoy. Add to a platter. After that, add the radish bulbs to the skillet, add a little more oil if needed, and saute. Add a little salt and pepper. After they have softened, add them to the top of the greens.
The radish greens remind me of Swiss chard, so the spicy greens with the sweet bulbs make for a colorful and diverse combination. If you are looking for what to cook for dinner, this will make a different and straightforward vegetable recipe for a quick, healthy meal.
